You’ve likely heard of Crossfit, it’s the mix of aerobic exercise, calisthenics, and Olympic weightlifting. Someone in your company is doing it and has definitely told you about it. These are people who take working out very seriously, likely in good shape, and can eat just about anything they want because of all the daily calories burned. We have a Crossfit disciple or two in the WideAngle office and you probably do too.

What does this have to do with 1:1 meetings?

We’ve found the best managers who use us, love us, and find us are the managers who are doing the proverbial Crossfit regarding their management discipline.

I, on the other hand, do not do Crossfit. I’m more of like a “jog-a-few-times-a-week” type of guy to stay in quasi-decent shape. Right now, WideAngle has been built for the corporate Crossfitter and there are a few happy ones. We’ll soon be rolling out features for occasional joggers like myself, but for now, managers who live, breathe, and view weekly/bi-weekly 1:1’s as the most powerful management tool (like we dolike we really do), then putting process, structure, and accountability around your 1:1 meetings is likely a decent solution.

View the continuum below around Crossfitters and how it compares to the corporate exercises most performance management solutions and best practices provide.

As you can see above, discipline, focus, determination, and perseverance will put you and your company in best shape possible with minimal turnover, increased performance, and great shape. From the folks we work with, the discipline required to maintain a sound management process like regularly scheduled 1 on 1 meetings is very similar to discipline required to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Of course, Crossfit is our example of any strenuous, disciplined physical activity. We used them as our example because of their popularity over the last decade.
